  6. Inspired by the task bar found in Windows95, this program has been
  7. written so that the same kind of functionality and ease of use can be
  8. brought to Windows 3.1 and Windows For Work Groups.
  9.  
  10. Windows was designed so that you might run several programs together.
  11. While doing this you quickly find that you run out of screen real
  12. estate.  Reading a help file while writing and testing an Excel based
  13. macro for example, or more.  Switching between applications now means
  14. using Alt-TAB, more often than not overshooting the application you
  15. want - very annoying. ProgramBar will help you switch between
  16. applications quickly, easily and with confidence.  It's as easy as
  17. using the mouse!
  18.  
  19. For most of the time you will not be aware that it is running on your
  20. system.  It uses very little in the way of system resources and
  21. processor time as it sits in the background, quietly noticing when you
  22. load and close down programs.
  23.  
  24. This file contains information on the features of ProgramBar, how to
  25. install ProgramBar, a legal disclaimer, version information about bugs
  26. fixed and new features, and a copy of FILE_ID.DIZ for BBS SysOps who
  27. lose the original.

  31. Features
  32. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  33.  
  34. The following main features are implemented in this release:
  35.  
  36. * Fast access menus for your most frequently used programs,
  37.   documents and help files.
  38.  
  39. * A `Start' button that gives access to much of the functionality of
  40.   ProgramBar.
  41.  
  42. * Access to, and running of, any program in your Program Manager
  43.   groups.
  44.  
  45. * A live desktop allowing frequently used documents to appear on the
  46.   desktop as icon links.  Documents may be dragged from File Manager
  47.   and added to the desktop.  A desktop system menu is available by
  48.   right clicking on the desktop.
  49.  
  50. * Access to all of the Control Panel configuration applets.
  51.  
  52. * Each running application represented on the front panel as a button.
  53.   A push of the button makes that application active. Iconic
  54.   applications may be hidden so as to neaten the desktop.
  55.  
  56. * Right clicking on the ProgramBar panel displays a list of active
  57.   applications that can be closed.
  58.  
  59. * Shutdown Windows, either returning to DOS, restarting Windows again,
  60.   or rebooting your machine.
  61.  
  62. * Fast search for files on your hard disk.  They may be launched or
  63.   added to the fast access menus or live desktop.
  64.  
  65. * Run a program specifying the command arguments, or a data file with
  66.   an association known to File Manager.
  67.  
  68. * The current time and date displayed on the front panel.  A calendar
  69.   window helps you plan and set alarms.

  71. * Full configuration of ProgramBar via a popup dialog box.

  80. * Flyby help hints when you let the mouse hover over part of the
  81.   ProgramBar interface.

  83. * Quick access to this help file (click on the ProgramBar logo on the
  84.   right hand side of the bar.)

  86. * Drag and drop of files from File Manager onto ProgramBar. Automatic
  87.   separation into Applications, Documents and Help files.
  88.  
  89. * The state of ProgramBar is saved between sessions.
  90.  
  91. * When permanently visible maximized windows may be resized to
  92.   accommodate the reduced desktop area.
  93.  
  94. * Applications may be excluded from the front panel task switching
  95.   buttons to reduce clogging up of the panel.
  96.  
  97. * Task switching buttons on the front panel may be stacked onto more
  98.   than one row.
  99.  
  100. * ProgramBar may be triggered from any of the four edges of the
  101.   screen.  A convenient marker can be displayed on the last triggered
  102.   edge, or all available triggering edges.

  104. * Applications/documents and help files added to the fast access menus
  105.   may be edited to give more appropriate titles, run time arguments,
  106.   or different working directories.

  108. * Better support for people who use cursor screen wrap: the size of
  109.   the region that can be used to make ProgramBar popup may be
  110.   adjusted.  The time delay before ProgramBar hides again may be
  111.   increase.  Also a time delay before ProgramBar is displayed may be
  112.   set, avoiding the `overshoot' problem associated with controls near
  113.   the edge of the screen.
  114.  
  115. * Menu and front panel fonts may be changed from within ProgramBar.  A
  116.   sample box also shows the suitability of the font for reproducing
  117.   non-standard characters that may be used in titles.
  118.  
  119. * 3D effect on all dialog boxes though the automatic use of
  120.   CTL3DV2.DLL if present.  Tabbed dialog boxes are adjusted to look
  121.   more like their Windows 95 counterparts when used in conjunction
  122.   with this DLL.
  123.  
  124. * Better crash protection.  ProgramBar interferes with or supersedes
  125.   much of the functionality of Windows in order to implement its
  126.   features.  Should another application `fall over' or crash
  127.   ProgramBar should not be affected.  Neither should ProgramBar cause
  128.   another application to crash.  In the unlikely event that ProgramBar
  129.   crashes it removes all of its hooks and cleans up after itself, thus
  130.   minimizing the chance of another program crashing.
  131.  
  132. * Hidden out of the way when you don't need it.  May also be
  133.   permanently visible on your desktop.
  134.  
  135. * The Control Panel may be inhibited from running in order that a
  136.   potential clash between ProgramBar and Control Panel is avoided.
  137.   The clash arises because the same dialog box may be opened by both
  138.   applications and different values set.  This is a precautionary
  139.   measure only.

  142. Installation
  143. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  144.  
  145. There are four files required for the correct use of ProgramBar.  They are:
  146.  
  147. PROGBAR.EXE     The executable that provides all of the functionality
  148.                 of ProgramBar.
  149. PBHOOK.DLL      A DLL that is used by ProgramBar to monitor system
  150.                 activity, notify of programs being opened or closed.
  151. PROGBAR.HLP     Help file describing the main features of ProgramBar.
  152. CONFIG.HLP      Help file for the configuration dialog box.
  153.  
  154.  
  155. In addition, the following two files should also be present in the archive:
  156.  
  157. README.TXT    Text instructions on how to install the program plus 
  158.                 additional information (this file).
  159. FILE_ID.DIZ     A file that assists BBS operators in maintaining their
  160.                 archives.
  161.  
  162.  
  163. To install ProgramBar follow the steps below:
  164.  
  165. 1.  Create a new directory for ProgramBar. (e.g. C:\WINAPPS\PROGBAR)
  166.  
  167. 2.  Copy all the files listed above into this directory.
  168.  
  169. 3.  Then activate Program Manager and choose the program group that
  170.     you want to place the ProgramBar launch icon into.
  171.  
  172. 4.  From Program Manager's menu chose File|New...
  173.  
  174. 5.  Select Program Item, then press the OK button.
  175.  
  176. 6.  Fill in the name of the icon and the path where the executable may
  177.     be found.
  178.  
  179. 7.  If you want to have ProgramBar launch when you run Windows, place
  180.     a copy of the icon in the StartUp group.  This may be done by
  181.     keeping the CTRL key pressed down while clicking on the ProgramBar
  182.     icon and dragging it to the StartUp group.
  183.  
  184. Clicking on the ProgramBar icon will now run the program.  ProgramBar
  185. creates an initialisation file called PROGBAR.INI in the windows
  186. directory and a file in the same directory as its executable called
  187. PROGBAR.DAT.  Details on alarms will be stored in PROGBAR.ALM, and
  188. information on the live desktop in DESKTOP.DT.  The user may create
  189. additional desktop related files with the extension .DTL.
  190.  
  191. ProgramBar assumes that both the Program Manager (progman.exe) and
  192. WinHelp (winhelp.exe) executables are available.  Some default icons
  193. are taken from these files for display purposes.

  255. * If a file specified in control.ini did not exist then ProgramBar
  256.   crashed during startup.  Fixed.
  257.  
  258. * ProgramBar refused to accept an existing file when editing the
  259.   attributes of a file on the fast menu that was not on the current
  260.   drive.  Fixed.

  262. * ProgramBar crashed under certain circumstances when trying to obtain
  263.   the date time stamp of a non-existent file during startup.  Fixed.

  285.   circumstances.  Fixed.

  287. * While entering the password for a screen saver it was possible to
  288.   activate ProgramBar.  Fixed.

  290. * When deleting the details of an application excluded from the button
  291.   bar, sometimes the wrong item was deleted.  Fixed.

  293. * Dragging of a file onto ProgramBar caused update problems when the

  325. * Popup delay now implemented so that the cursor can now `bounce' off
  326.   the edge of the desktop when using corner controls without

  329. * The live desktop has its own popup menu (right click on the desktop)
  330.   which includes the ability to arrange iconic windows, enable/disable
  331.   the screen saver, run the screen saver, and bring up the
  332.   configuration dialog box.

  334. * The clock now has a calendar and alarm capability.  Click on the
  335.   front panel clock for a calendar.  Alarms may be set to play a
  336.   sound, execute a program, and/or scroll a message across the title
  337.   bar of a window. Alarms can repeat hourly, daily, weekly, weekdays,
  338.   weekends, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly and yearly.  An alarm that
  339.   is delayed (because ProgramBar was not running when it was
  340.   triggered) may be ignored, accumulated, deleted or set to trigger.
  341.  
  342. * The live desktop may now store documents as icons.  These files are
  343.   stored as a link to the document and take up negligible system
  344.   resources. Double clicking on the icon will run the associated
  345.   application and load the document.  The title of the document may be
  346.   changed to a more appropriate long title.  This is similar to the
  347.   long file name system employed in Windows95.  Documents are dragged
  348.   from File Manager onto the desktop, or added using the desktop popup
  349.   menu.
  350.  
  351.   A Document may be duplicated from its system menu or by pressing the
  352.   CTRL key while selecting and moving the document icon.
  353.  
  354. * Icons on the desktop may be separated into document and program
  355.   types.  Each type may be placed on a different edge of the screen.
  356.   It is possible for the desktop to automatically arrange itself.
  357.  
  358. * The groups present in Program Manager may now be rescanned while
  359.   ProgramBar is running.  This option is available from the
  360.   configuration dialog.

  362. * The configuration dialog may now be minimized.  It does not (and

  420. * ProgramBar failed to handle a large number of applications on the
  421.   front panel, generating a `TaskBar overloaded' message.  This
  422.   message should now only appear under extreme unreasonable
  423.   circumstances (ie when the buttons are so narrow that they cannot
  424.   display their contents.)
  425.  
  426. * Control Panel applets are now cached, significantly decreasing
  427.   ProgramBar's load time.  If any of the applets used by Control Panel
  428.   are replaced, deleted or added to then ProgramBar will re-cache the
  429.   data where required.  Data is also re-cached if the screen driver is
  430.   changed as the icon format may be different.

  432. * Control Panel applets in the [MMCPL] section of control.ini are now
  433.   scanned as well as the [drivers.desc] section.

  435. * A peculiar window create/destroy/create cycle that assigned the same
  436.   window handle in both cases resulted in two buttons being displayed
  437.   on the ProgramBar front panel.  E-mail Connection was the only
  438.   application seen to exhibit this behaviour.  Fixed.

  440. * Added a switch that allows the display of ellipsis (...) on the
  441.   front panel task switch buttons to be turned off.  Useful for when a
  442.   large number of buttons are displayed.

  444. * Confirmation of closure of a DOS box via right clicking on the front
  445.   panel is now required.  A strongly worded message reminds the user
  446.   that resources may be lost and Windows may be impaired.
  447.  
  448. * The Find file dialog box now defaults to searching subdirectories.
  449.  
  450. * Most error dialog box and menu message strings moved to the resource
  451.   file for easier internationalisation of the executable.
  452.  
  453. * Multiple arguments may now be specified for file wildcards and
  454.   directories in the Find file dialog box.  Each argument must be
  455.   separated by a semicolon (;).

  457. * Button text colours on the front panel are now fixed to black
  458.   regardless of the choice of personal colour scheme.

  460. * CTL3DV2.DLL now used for dialog boxes if it is installed.  The 3D

  462.   using this DLL.  Tab dialog boxes provide a Windows 95 look and feel
  463.   when this DLL is detected.

  465. * ProgramBar crash protection code improved, now distinguishes between
  466.   modules of the same name.

  468. * Annoying screen flicker caused by selecting a new dialog page on the
  469.   configuration dialog removed.

  471. * Intermittant problem when switching from a DOS full screen app back
  472.   to Windows caused the button indicating the active app to have a
  473.   black background.  Technique for drawing buttons changed, fixing
  474.   problem.

  476. * Split menus crashed ProgramBar when sorted after an insertion.  Most
  477.   likely to occur on the fast access menus.  Fixed.

  480. Version 2.1, released 21-Nov-95
  481. -------------------------------
  482.  
  483. * Non-standard Windows colour schemes interfered with icon masking
  484.   using monochrome bitmaps.  Menu icons gained lurid clashing colour
  485.   backgrounds.  Fixed.
  486.  
  487. * If both clock and date were not displayed on startup of ProgramBar
  488.   then a recursive loop was entered, locking Windows.  Ctrl-Alt-Del
  489.   aborted ProgramBar, but Windows was left in an unstable state and
  490.   running ProgramBar again returned the user to the DOS prompt without
  491.   warning. Fixed.
  492.  
  493. * Code has been installed to ensure that should ProgramBar crash for
  494.   any reason, it is now safer to re-run the program.  Due to the
  495.   nature in which ProgramBar interacts with Windows it cannot be
  496.   guaranteed to prevent further crashes/lockups/unexpected kickouts to
  497.   DOS.
  498.  
  499. * Browse buttons added to fast access configuration dialogs to
  500.   complement the drag/drop addition of files.

  503. Version 2.0, released 18-Nov-95

  506. * Added full configuration to ProgramBar via a popup dialog box.  Most
  507.   changes to the configuration dialog are immediately reflected in the
  508.   appearance of ProgramBar.  All changes can be easily cancelled.

  510. * The Find File dialog box now provides a default search directory, it
  511.   will be the root directory of the first fixed or remote disk on your
  512.   system (most likely C:\).

  514. * When using the Find File dialog box to append a second set of files,

  535. * While finding the control panel applets, entries in the

  537.   Windows system directory.  ProgramBar could not find drivers that
  538.   included a full path in their entry.  Fixed.

  540. * Added a /d command line option to produce a debugging script during
  541.   start up.  Currently limited to examining loading of DLL's and
  542.   opening files.

  544. * When switching to an application using the button bar, if the
  545.   application had been disabled by a dialog box then the focus was
  546.   incorrectly set to the application (not the dialog box).  ProgramBar
  547.   now searches for the most recent dialog box that has disabled the
  548.   application and sets the input focus there.

  550. * ProgramBar may now be accessed from the left, right and top edges of
  551.   the screen in addition to the bottom edge.
  552.  
  553. * The size of the region that can activate ProgramBar may now be
  554.   modified.  Added for the benefit of those who use cursor wrap and
  555.   can't hit the edge pixels reliably.
  556.  
  557. * The time delay between moving the cursor off of the front panel and
  558.   ProgramBar hiding itself may now be adjusted by the user.
  559.  
  560. * Choice of font used on the front panel and in menus moved from
  561.   progbar.ini to the configuration dialog box.  Dynamic adjustment
  562.   shows what the new front panel will look like (if visible on the
  563.   desktop) before the change is committed.
